What a good bank-statement CSV contains

A useful statement CSV has one row per transaction and five columns: the date in one consistent format, the description as printed, a single signed amount (negative for debits, positive for credits, not split into debit and credit columns with blank cells), the running balance after each transaction, and a best-effort category.

A digital PDF, one with a text layer, converts more reliably than a scan. A scanned or photographed statement needs OCR first, and skewed pages or faint print usually lower the confidence score. A scan can still be converted, so expect a lower score and check it more carefully.

Before you import a converted CSV anywhere, sum the amount column and confirm that the opening balance plus that sum equals the closing balance printed on the statement. Ledgerary runs this check on every conversion and shows the mismatch if it fails, so a CSV that is quietly missing a row does not look correct.
